Pete gets himself in trouble and wants Clark to use his powers to get him out of it. Lana, Chloe and Lex dig deeper into Adam's mysterious past.
What's up with Clark: Clark is at the hospital visiting his dad,
who's suffered a heart attack. Clark blames himself, saying that Jonathan's
heart is weak because he was granted special powers to bring Clark back
from Metropolis when he was under the influence of Red Kryptonite. His
dad tells him he'll be fine and that he should go home and get some rest.
On the drive home he's almost hit by two speeding cars. Clark follows
them using his super speed and he arrives at a finish line. The two cars
had been illegally street racing. When the driver gets out, the winner
is pronounced the "King of Speed, Pete The Boss Ross!"
What's up with Pete: The next day, Pete is hanging out with Jason
Dante, the guy who's letting Pete race in his supped up car and who's
taught Pete how to drive. Clark shows up at Dante's shop and talks to
Pete. He tells him it's wrong that he's racing illegally, but Pete tells
Clark to keep it a secret, because that's what friends do for each other.
Later Clark tells Pete he'll do whatever he has to in order to keep Pete
from breaking the law and getting hurt. It turns out the cars run on Kryptonite
boosters, that are highly unstable. Pete tells him he'll stop racing,
but later that night, he shows up to defend his title. As Pete zones in,
Dante tells him to throw the race. Pete looks like he's going to comply,
but at the last second he hits his booster and wins the race. Afterwords,
Dante tells Pete he's out 20 thousand dollars because of Pete and tells
him if he doesn't get him the money, he'll kill him.
What's up with Lana: Lana confronts Adam with an article about
a guy named Chad Nash, who's picture looks exactly like Adam and who's
bio reads as a list of all of Adam's talents. But most importantly, it
says that Chad Nash died five months ago of a rare liver disease. Adam
tells her she can't tell anyone what she's found, that his life depends
on it.
What's up with Lex: Lex and Chloe discuss Adam. Chloe tells Lex
the liquid that was in the vile she found under Adam's bed contained blood
platelets that are unlike anything anyone's ever seen and that a Dr. Tang
was visiting Adam twice a week in the hospital. Lex visits Dr. Tang in
Metropolis, she's a world renowned molecular biologist. She says she doesn't
see patients, but as he's leaving, Lex tells her he knows about the platelets.
How it ends: Pete tells Clark about the race and that he needs
his help. Clark breaks into Dante's shop and sees that he's running a
chop shop and has tons of illegal license plates and registrations. Clark
goes to the police, but when they raid the shop they find nothing. A beaten
Pete shows up later and tells Clark Dante has an informant at the sheriffs
office and he knew about the raid. He says that if Clark doesn't steal
$20 thousand dollars for him to give to Dante that Dante will kill Pete
and his parents. Clark goes to Lex for the money, but Lex refuses saying
if he pays them once, they'll keep coming back for more. Clark steals
Lex's Porsche and tells Pete his plan. Pete will challenge Dante, who's
never lost, to one final race. If Dante wins, he gets the Porsche, if
Pete wins, the debt is settled. Clark tells Pete he'll use his heat vision
to fry Dante's engine, guaranteeing Pete's victory. As the two get set
to race, Clark over hears Dante talking to his lackey. They've rigged
Pete's car so that when it tops 100 mph it will blow up. Before Clark
can stop them, or tell Pete, he's hit over the head with a container of
Kryptonite and is knocked out. They throw him in the back of Pete's car,
right by the kryptonite booster. The race begins. Pete hits the booster
and the Kryptonite is released. Once it's out and just before he hits
100mph Clark wakes up and pulls the fuel line, reducing the speed of the
car and spraying gas on the road. Dante's car hits the fuel and spins
out, flipping when it swerves off the road. When Pete and Clark get to
the car, it's too late. Dante is dead.
Dr. Tang comes to Lex and tells him all her funding has been cut. Lex
says he'll double her funding if she tells him where the platelets came
from and what she's using them for. That night Lana tells Adam she wants
to know the truth. Adam becomes extreamly angry and demands she leave
it alone and says if she tells anyone what she's found out, she'll regret
ever meeting him.
Clark returns the Porsche and Jonathan returns home. Pete comes to apologize
and tells Clark he'll never disrespect his powers again. He tries to challenge
Clark to a game of basketball, but Clark's still upset with him and walks
back to the house.

Pete finally gets his own Petecentric episode, and we all instantly regret it. It turns out that every time Pete went home after having three lines, he was working on some tricked-out race cars and getting his 2 Fast 2 Furious on. He's pretty good at it, too, until he lets all the racing wins go to his head and refuses to go along with a dive. Now the guy who taught Pete how to race wants to kill him and his family for the $20,000 he lost on bets. Pete turns to Clark, who has a schoolmarmish attitude toward all that loud racing, for help. Clark steals a car from Lex as collateral for a final race in which the guy who wants to kill Pete's family is killed, resolving the conflict with a bloody little bow. Meanwhile, Lana is getting more suspicious of Poor Man's Wes Bentley when she finds an obit for him that says he died a while back. He tells her not to tell anyone about it, while his eye bleeds. Boy's got something seriously wrong with him. And lastly, Lex meets Poonie Tang, a scientist who's been seeing PM'sWB and is doing some freaky biology. He wants in on the deal. Oh, and Bo didn't die. He had a heart attack, but he's up on his feet in no time.

Jonathan (to Clark): There's a lot o things you can do, but causing cardiac arrest isn't one of them.
Jonathan (to Clark): As hard as this may be for you to believe, not everything that goes wrong in Smallville is Clark Kent's fault.
Dante: Ladies and gentlemen, your reigning king of speed, Pete 'The Boss' Ross.
Dante (to Clark): Nice ride man. What's that thing do, zero to sixty in an hour.
Adam: Lana, you can't tell anyone. You have to promise not to tell anyone.
Lex (to Chloe): Privacy laws don't seem to phase you, do they?
Pete: Fine Clark, you win. I guess i'll just keep living vicariously through you.
Dante (to Pete): Oh you'll find a way 'cause if you don't the only car you'll be driving is a hearst.
Lex: I'm not a student doctor. I'm Lex Luthor.
Dr Teng: Am I supposed to be impressed.
Chloe (to Clark): You were right about Dante. He's the posterboy for lowjack.
Sheriff (to Clark): As usual Mr. Kent, your information's about as accurate as the local weather forecast.
Pete: You've done it before.
Clark: Yeah when I was on red kryptonite.
Pete: Well slip on a ring.
Pete (to Clark): If you don't give me that cash, we're dead.
Dante (to Pete): You've got quite the pair of lugnuts to take me on.
Pete (to Clark): Oh my god, I think he's dead.
Adam (to Lana): You tell anyone what you found out and you're gonna regret ever meeting me.
Pete (to Clark): I promise you until the day I die, I will not disrespect your powers ever again.

Finally, a Pete episode! And it's, well, just kind of okay. But the real disappointment had to do with Adam's real identity. Why, oh why, did they have to lead us on that way?
Once again, Clark's feeling guilty, this time because Jonathan's in the hospital after having a heart attack—probably as a result of those superpowers he borrowed from Jor-El to bring Clark back from Metropolis. But Clark's real problem at the moment is that his best friend is the new star of the illegal street racing scene in Smallville. Pete the Boss Ross is winning all the races (thanks to Kryptonite booster tanks) and he finally feels special. That is, until his mentor, Dante, asks him to throw a race, which he refuses. Now Dante's going to kill him and his parents if he doesn't pay him the twenty grand in bets he lost. He tells Clark, who says he'll figure something out, but when Clark reports the stolen cars and license plates he found in Dante's barn to the sheriff, a crooked deputy tips Dante off. Pete gets blamed for calling the cops and Dante beats him up, so he asks Clark to break into an ATM machine like he did when he was Kal, since Clark breaks the law all the time to help people anyway.
Meanwhile, Lana discovers that Adam is really Chad Nash, a Tulsa valedictorian who DIED of liver disease. He tells her to keep it a secret because his life depends on it—which could be a problem, since Lex and Chloe are on the case as well. Chloe finds out that Adam had regular visits from a molecular biologist named Dr. Tang from the university, and that Adam's serum has some kind of weird platelet-like substance in it. When Lex can't get any answers from her, he tells the university (which receives lots of Luthorcorp funding) and she's suspended. By the end, Lex then tells Dr. Tang that he'll double her funding if she tells him what the serum is and what she's using it for. Finally, Adam makes it clear to Lana that if she tells anyone, she'll regret ever meeting him.
Clark breaks down and asks Lex for the money to save Pete, but he refuses, saying the bad guy would just keep coming back for more. So Clark borrows Lex's Porsche (without informing him) and tells Pete they can make it the prize in a race with Dante, with Pete's prize being forgiven for the debt. Clark's plan is to fry Dante's engine with his heat vision, but then he uses his superhearing and finds out there's a bomb in Pete's car set to go off when he hits one hundred miles per hour. When he tries to stop the race, they bonk him on the head with a Kryptonite booster tank and throw him in Pete's trunk. He wakes up just before Pete hits 100 and yanks a fuel line, causing the car to slow down and dump gasoline all over the road. (more...)

During Pete's street races, they frequently showed his speedometer, and the highest it ever got was around 101 mph. Even a stock Ford Mustang can go over 101, and "tricked out" street racers usually hit speeds of 140 to 160 miles per hour when they hit their boost. Apparently the kryptonite wasn't really helping at all.
John Glover (Lionel Luthor) doesn't appear in this episode.
